Ellen on hate in California

Paul over at blog@cliffdweller posted this Youtube video of Ellen's comments on the teen who was killed a couple of weeks ago in Oxnard, California for asking a fellow male classmate to be his Valentine. I had read about this and really couldn't find the words to talk about it. It both angers and scares me. One of these days, the haters are going to really figure out what kind of damage they do, to others and to themselves. I can hope anyway.

Anyway, what Ellen has to say is pretty profound.

And here is the rest of it.

Ignorance leads to fear; fear leads to hate; hate leads to irrationality. How much saner it would have been to simply say, "Gee, I'm flattered, and I'm sorry, but I'll pass. That's just not who I am or what I'm about. But hey, if you want we can still be friends."

That's the scary part. The lack of rational thinking and behavior. The fear that is drummed into people's heads by haters is so strong that it overrules pretty much everything else that makes us human beings.

I heard some about this, I agree with phil, a simple no ty would have done the job. I dont know how old either of these boys were, but it's sad that a simple question would cause one to take another's life. We may all be different, but each one of us should be treated with the same respect.

This is so very tragic. Ellen was eloquent, and compassionate. I shake my head that this can happen in our country. I know better, but I still want to believe somehow that someday we will all rise above hate! Thanks for posting this! Wendy
